About This Kit – Whats Inside the Box

  • 250 Grams of selected Raw Shellac Flakes
  • 1 litre Denatured Absolute Alcohol
  • 2.2 litre Mixing Bucket with Snap Lid
  • 190 Macron Filter Cone

This kit is ideal for antique restoration, small furniture pieces or even guitars and other musical instruments. Simply pour the Shellac into the 2.2 litre Mixing Bucket, add the 1 litre of  Denatured Absolute Alcohol and mix to combine. The Shellac will begin to dissolve, the more you mix/agitate the solution, the sooner the solution will be ready. This kit Includes Denatured Absolute Alcohol because it dissolves the shellac much faster than store bought Methylated Spirits, you can read more about this in our blog HERE. Once all solids have fully dissolved, you will be left with a lovely Liquid Shellac that is mixed to the ideal ratio of 1:4. Filter the mixture using the provided Filter Cone to ride of any impurities, the mixture can be added back into the empty 1 litre Denatured Alcohol bottle and stores in a dark cool place for up to 6 months.

The benefits of shellac (French polish) over other timber coatings

A main benefit of shellac is its ability to ‘melt’ into the previous layer. This creates a single layer finish on your final result, the single layer is a superior clear finish that allows the natural tones of the timber to shine though, very few timber protective coatings have this ability and can offer the same clarity.

Why choose Restorers Choice Shellac?

Shellac is an organic material and must be stored below 14 degrees to ensure the product stays fresh and usable. Shellac purchased from hardware stores often sits on shelves for months, facing harsh summer temperatures, decreasing shelf life, and causing issues when dissolving and drying.

All Restores Choice shellac is stored in temperature-controlled containers when shipped from India, kept at 8 degrees or below in our storage facility, and shipped in heat protective foil all the way to your door. The extra length we go sets us apart from your average hardware store, guaranteeing a quality product.

With 3 different application methods, you can do it your way! You can use a brush, polishing rubber (fad) or spray gun to apply the shellac. Each method offers unique advantages, and the best method is often debatable, we recommend a French Polishing Mop Brush for easy application.
